China’s First LNG Import Terminal Powering the Greater Bay Area
Our Shenzhen Dapeng LNG Terminal, located on the picturesque Dapeng Peninsula of Guangdong Province, holds historical importance as China’s first operational LNG import terminal, officially commencing operations in 2006. Jointly developed by CNOOC, Shenzhen Energy, and BP, the facility marked the beginning of China’s transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
The terminal includes a dedicated deep-water jetty capable of accommodating LNG carriers up to 266,000 m³, multiple cryogenic storage tanks, and state-of-the-art regasification systems. Its annual handling capacity exceeds 6 million tonnes, with natural gas distributed through an extensive pipeline network that supplies the Pearl River Delta region, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Hong Kong.
Dapeng LNG has consistently maintained one of the best safety and reliability records in China’s energy sector. The facility integrates advanced automation, real-time monitoring, and emergency response systems to ensure secure and efficient operations. Its contributions have significantly reduced regional carbon emissions by replacing coal-based energy with clean-burning natural gas.
As a benchmark for China’s LNG industry, Dapeng LNG Terminal continues to expand its infrastructure and service capability, supporting the Greater Bay Area’s sustainable energy development and China’s national carbon neutrality goals.
